Decide to wear purple tomorrow and show your support for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Organizations, professionals, and individuals across the world recognize the significance of elder abuse and the need to bring an end to elder neglect. Abuse of the elderly includes physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. The potential for economic abuse results from improper use of an elder’s resources.

The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) wants to raise awareness and turn awareness into action. According to the INPEA, ageism is a major cause of elder abuse. Intergenerational relationships can encourage positive attitudes towards the elderly. Empowering older adults to exercise their rights and advocate for their own interests is vital.

For those that live in Alabama and wish to report suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation, call the Adult Abuse Hotline at 1-800-458-7214 or email aps@dhr.alabama.gov. All reports are confidential and may be made anonymously.
